What is Yoga?

Yoga is a scientific system of physical and mental practices that originated in India more than 6,000 years ago. Its purpose is to assist each one of us to achieve our highest potential and to experience enduring health as well as a blissful happiness through our connection with the mind, body and spirit. With yoga we can extend our health and productive years far beyond the norm, and at the same time, improve the quality of our lives by reducing the levels of stress and fatigue we carry in our bodies.

I’ve never done yoga before. What classes are best suited for me?

Beginners should start with our Power Yoga Basics classes.  (If they do not work with your schedule, we suggest that you contact us so that we may determine the best way for you to begin your practice with us.)  Be patient in your progress! Over time, you will become familiar with the poses and you will soon be comfortable in any class on our schedule. Also, look for our Beginner’s Series Workshops which are scheduled every month.

Can I do yoga if I am inflexible?

Absolutely. Through steady, intelligent practice, stiffer students will gain flexibility, just as weaker students will gain more strength. All of our classes are taught as a balanced action regarding strength and flexibility. They must be developed simultaneously for safety.

What do I wear?

Wear comfortable pull-on pants, leggings or shorts made of breathable fabric. Women should wear a former fitting top. A big t-shirt will only get in the way of your practice. No shoes are required. Bare feet, please.

Do I need a mat?

Yes. You will need a yoga sticky mat. If you do not own one, you can rent one from us for $1.00 or purchase one at our studio.

Can I come to any class on the schedule?

Yes. Our classes are ongoing. Once you sign up for a pass, you are not limited to coming to that class each time. Just be certain to choose the class for your personal abilities.

How do I sign up?

Checks are made out to Cleveland Yoga and all passes expire within 120 days from the date of purchase. We accept checks or cash, of course.  We also accept MC/Visa for purchases of $50 or more.  Please do not plan to use your credit card for drop in fees.

What is the meaning of OM?

Om is an ancient mantra, a primordial vibration. It is so old that its very nature is innately sacred. In many of our classes we follow the tradition of beginning our classes chanting Om and the invocation to create a sense of harmony and unity among the students in a powerful way.

What is the meaning of Namaste?

Our classes always end with the teacher reciting the words “Namaste” to the class. It is done at the end of class because the mind is less active and the energy in the room is more peaceful. The teacher initiates Namaste as a symbol of gratitude and respect toward the students and the teachers in his/her life. And in return invites the students to connect with their lineage thereby allowing the truth to flow – the truth that we are all one when we live from the heart. Reciting Namaste allows individuals to come together energetically to a place of connection and timelessness, free from the bonds of the ego. Simply said, Namaste means: The Spirit in Me Honors The Spirit in You.
