Tips for Developing A Daily Meditation Practice

Meditation is a journey.  Working to make this a daily habit will impact all areas of  your life and will take you from feeling better to actually being better.  Here are some tips to help guide you on your meditation path:

  • Meditate each morning, right when you wake up, to help center you as you begin your day.
  • Find a distraction-free place to meditate.
  • Decide how long you want to meditate before you start and set a timer.  We recommend the Insight Meditation Timer (available for free in for Iphone and Android in the App Store).
  • Sit quietly, or find a guided meditation online.
  • Keep it simple. Don’t try to force certain state of mind; acknowledge your thoughts and then let them drift away.
  • Stay focused on your body—connect to the present moment.
  • Start small.  Begin with 5 minutes and gradually add additional time as your practice develops.

You may feel fidgety, start to be uncomfortable, itchy, or just have a hard time sitting still.  This is normal and expected. Stay still and let the feeling pass and refocus for the duration of your allotted time.
