Years teaching yoga: 8 total, 4 at CY
Teaching style: Intentional asana. Themes, poetry and yoga philosophy weaved into class. Creative flows with attention to alignment and breathwork. Recognition of your name and acknowledgement of your individual spirit as a driving force to the energy in the room.
What to expect: a blend of effort and ease. A slow start that builds into creative flows with an emphasis on moving with intention. Plenty of time weaving balance, extra chaturangas and more time on your feet. Emphasis on awareness of breath, strength and placement of bones. Poetic themes build into the collective movement and overall spirit. Music is instrumental songs followed by steady beats, shifting into strong vocals (maybe a Drake number) and eventually more acoustic/indie rock. Always wrapping up with grounding energy and a savasana with serene sounds, often gongs, chimes, nature, classical or humming.
Personal inspiration: my aunt who passed away from early onset Alzheimer’s. Teaching yoga and coming up with longer sequences taps into my brain in a way that can help me prevent dementia and inspire others.
I often visit my mentor Anny Noratto at OM Movement in Coconut Grove, FL for asana inspiration and listen and watch Ben Kalra for deepening my understanding of yoga philosophy.
I love hosting yoga retreats in Ojai, CA.
Outside the studio: The most important aspect of my life outside the studio is continuing to deepen my relationship with my children (Isaiah 23, Aaliyah 20 and Grace 19) and show up for them as the best possible human I can be. I also love connecting with my students and getting to know them better. In my free time, I enjoy traveling with my husband Darin and walking (and snuggling) my dog Milo. I absolutely love Mitchell’s ice cream.
Why CY: I love the students! Anyone willing to wake up for a 7:15am Sunday class is dedicated. I appreciate the community that CY has built over 20 years. Tami is a big reason that I fell in love with yoga!
